Chairman Q&A…

12 years on, John has been given the honour of becoming the new Chairman of the Ipswich and Suffolk Club.

As you take over as Chairman, what do you feel are the greatest challenges facing the Club?

We are living in a very different world post‑Covid. Habits have changed, and pressures on hospitality venues have increased significantly. Many members now work from home, and the  leisurely lunch before returning to the office has largely disappeared. In addition, like many towns and cities, Ipswich itself has also changed; its draw for shopping, banking, and socialising has weakened.

On top of that and across the board, the cost of running the Club has risen sharply. We are not immune to increases affecting all of us in our daily lives.

And what are the Club’s strengths?

The Club was established in the 1880s and, over its 140‑year history, has continually adapted to the changing world around it.  That's key really, retaining the 'heritage' of the Club but keeping it relevant to the expectations of today’s world.

What do you hope the Board will achieve during your time as Chairman?

Our priority is to ensure the Club weathers the storm currently affecting the hospitality sector. The coming years will be challenging as we manage rising costs. We will continue investing in the fabric of our buildings; much of this work is essential, even if not always visible to members. The Board does not make decisions lightly. It’s a balancing act with every change carefully considered against a return on investment.

Above all, our aim is to keep our existing members happy and vitally, to grow our numbers.

You must be pleased to be Chairman of such a dedicated Board?

The Board is excellent and contributes a great deal of effort and support to the running of this organisation. At this point, I just want to recognise Sarah Swallow after her two years as Chairman. Sarah, like all of our Directors has and will continue to work tirelessly for the Club. At this point, I should also welcome Terry Baxter to the role of Vice Chairman, his involvement is proving invaluable to the Club.

In addition, although not a Director, our new Manager, Andrew Vales, has seamlessly settled into his role. We have no doubt that his experience and expertise will help guide us positively forward in the years ahead.

Finally, do you have a message for our members?

A simple, thank you. Your continued support and understanding are deeply appreciated. This Club is YOUR place, and it exists to offer something unique, valued, and enduring for all of us.
